3 Signs Your Crane or Truck Tyres Are Damaged
If you operate a mobile crane or truck, it is important that you understand how to recognise the signs that the tyres are damaged. It is also vital that you understand the possible causes of tyre damage to truck and crane tyres so you can take steps to prevent it from occurring. Below is a guide to everything you need to know about the different types of damage and its causes.
Exposed bead wires
Bead wire is the name of the wire which is used to reinforce the rubber on a tyre. Bead wires are not normally visible. If you notice that you can see the mesh of bead wire on the edge of the tyre, this is a sign that it is seriously damaged. Possible causes of exposed bead wires include excess heat created by a faulty brake drum, over or under inflation of the tyre or overloading of the truck or crane. You should not drive equipment which has exposed bead wires on its tyres. Tyres with exposed bead wires cannot be repaired, so you will need to have the tyre replaced.
Damaged sidewall
The sidewall is the piece of the tyre which is not in contact with the road. The sidewall on your crane or truck tyres should be uniform in appearance. If you notice any unusual bulges or misshapen areas of the sidewall, this suggests that the inner liner or casing has been damaged. Damaged is most often caused by improper inflation of the tyre, poor ground conditions or damaged caused by high-speed cornering. A tyre contractor will be able to inspect the tyre. If the damage is slight, the contractor may be able to repair and refit the tyre. However, if the damage is severe, you will need to buy and fit a new crane or truck tyre.
Surface damage
Now and again, you should inspect the surface of the tyre. The part of the tyre which comes into contact with the ground can be damaged as it passes over debris and potholes. When inspecting the tyre, you should check that no stones or rocks have become jammed between the treads. If you notice any jammed debris, you should remove it and check it has not punctured or deformed the surface of the rubber. If it has, you will need to have the tyre repaired or replaced by a tyre service.
