How to Fix Castor Wheels to Equipment

About Me
Buying Replacement Tyres

The tyres on your car will not last forever. As you drive along, the rubber on your tyres will begin to wear down due to the friction created by the contact with the road surface. Driving with worn tyres, it can be extremely dangerous. I didn't know about any of this until I took my car to be serviced. The mechanic examined the tyres and said that they were very worn. He recommended that I replace the tyres and talked me through the different options that I had. I learnt a great deal from him and I am really pleased with my new tyres.

Are you planning to order some specialised castors for your application? Read on and discover some of the ways through which those castors may be designed to be fitted onto your equipment. Use this information to select the most appropriate fitting method for your application.

Top Plate Fitting Style

You can consider asking for castors with a top plate. This plate can be either rectangular or square. The plate has two or four holes through which the castors can be fastened onto your equipment. This style of fitting is very strong and is ideal for heavy-duty applications. Select the two-hole version in case you wish to install the castors on smaller equipment or furniture.

Bolt Hole Fitting Style

Another method of fixing castors onto equipment involves the use of a bolt hole. The hole is located at the top of the bracket found on the castor. Your equipment should have a stud which is inserted into this bolt hole and secured so that the castor remains firmly in place. The insert should be designed in such a way that it will form a tight fit in the bolt hole so that the castor doesn't wobble as it is being used. This method may not stand up to the rigours of heavy-duty applications.

Single Bolt Fitting Style

An alternative to the bolt hole fitting style is the single bolt style. Here, a single bolt protrudes from the top of the bracket on the castor. An appropriate anchorage method is used to link the equipment onto this bolt. For example, a threaded insert can be welded onto the equipment. The bolt is then screwed onto this insert to form a permanent installation. This fitting style is often stronger than what is possible with the top plate style.

U Bracket Fitting Style

Castors can also have a bracket shaped like a "U". This bracket is then fitted over the appropriate section of the material (wood, for example). You can then pass a bolt or a screw from one end of the bracket, through the material of the equipment to the other end of the bracket. This method of fitting castors is very common in the furniture-making industry.

Talk to the manufacturer of the castor wheels about these and any other fitting style which that supplier may be offering clients. Use the expert insights provided to identify the fitting method which is best suited to offer lasting results without exceeding your budget.
